Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, has stated that the National Assembly would hold an open discussion on President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform proposals before it to solicit input from Nigerians.

Adaramodu, who said that the bulk of individuals criticizing the bills in the media had not examined them and were operating on the assumption that any tax would impose a hardship on people, stated, “I don’t see anything retrogressive in the tax reform bills.”

The senator representing Ekiti South Senatorial District talked to the media in his hometown of Ilawe, Ekiti, on Saturday evening following the Ilawe Unity Day celebration and the introduction of a N500 million assistance fund for the community’s teaching hospital annex to begin operations.

The Presidency sent tax reform legislation to the National Assembly, which was met with criticism. But Adaramodu said, “Have those criticizing the tax reform bill seen them?” Will you call a tax reform measure retrogressive because it excludes low-income taxpayers from paying? A tax reform law that ensures that there is no double or multiple taxation; I don’t see anything retrogressive about these bills.

“Let Nigerians wait; we will have an open conversation about it. We will have a public hearing in the National Assembly, and everyone is welcome to attend and give their own point of view. The aggregate of their opinions will be what the National Assembly will consider when taking a position.
