The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Jigawa Command, claims to have obtained the conviction of 107 illegal drug dealers in the state by 2024.
Mr Musa Maina, the Agency’s State Commander, said this in an interview with NAN on Wednesday in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State.
Maina stated that 702 suspects, including 25 females and 677 males, were arrested during the review period, and 592,626.52 kilograms of suspected illicit drugs were seized.
He said the substances included 466.968 kilos of suspected cannabis sativa, 23.655 kilograms of suspected psychotropic drugs, and 100.185 kilograms of additional narcotics of abuse.
He also stated that throughout the time period under consideration, the command advised 591 drug users, including 27 females and 564 males, on the dangers of drug abuse.
He also stated that the command has successfully treated 36 drug addicts at its rehabilitation center.
“According to him, we were able to successfully rehabilitate 36 drug addicts at our rehabilitation center, as well as present 99 drug-prevention education lectures and advocacy addresses.
“The lectures and advocacy talks were delivered through various mediums, including tertiary institutions, the NYSC, government agencies, drug-free clubs, CSOs, marketplaces, and print and electronic media.”
The state commander went on to say that the command remained resolute in its commitment to reduce the demand for illicit narcotics and other substances of abuse in the state.
“The command worked hard to limit the supply and abuse of hard drugs and other psychoactive substances, and we are committed to doing more to achieve greater feats. While I solicit greater collaboration from stakeholders to rid the state of substance abuse, I commend traditional and religious institutions, as well as the state government, for their support and cooperation in the fight against drug abuse thus far.”
