The National institutions Commission (NUC) has promoted three medical-related programs at Nigerian institutions from bachelor’s to doctoral levels.
On Wednesday, the NUC Acting Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Franca Elochi Chukwuonwo, issued a press statement revealing this.
Chukwuonwo stated that the decision was motivated by the need to combine more clinical and practical sessions, improve basic course content, improve clinical skills, and address all specialized areas holistically.
She further stated that the upgrade fit with worldwide best practices for training professionals in the concerned industries.
As part of the adjustments, the duration of the impacted programmes has been increased from five to six years to provide for additional courses and clinical experience.
The statement, titled ‘Clarification on Nomenclature Change and Upgraded Programmes from Bachelor’s Degree to Doctor Status in Nigerian Universities,’ however noted that the Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science (DMLS) programme is not approved in any university in the country.
