Temilade Openiyi, also known as Tems, defeated Davido, Yemi Alade, Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Asake to win Best African Music Performance at the 67th Grammy Awards on Sunday.
Tems’ smash song ‘Love Me Jeje’ won out over “Tomorrow” (Yemi Alade), “MMS” (Asake & Wizkid), “Sensational” (Chris Brown featuring Davido & Lojay), and “Higher” (Burna Boy).
“Love Me Jeje,” a sample of Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 song of the same name, has gained critical acclaim from global music fans since its debut in April.
Tems’ success means that the ladies have won the newly created division consecutively.
Tyla, a South African musician, earned her first Grammy last year with her global hit “Water.”
Meanwhile, Tems was overlooked for two further nominations.
