Stella Nwadigo, a 45-year-old teacher, was remanded by the Ogba Chief Magistrate Court on Thursday for attacking a three-year-old Christ-Mitos Primary School student in Lagos State’s Ikorodu region.
A viral video posted on Wednesday shows Nwadigbo hitting the youngster at regular intervals for not learning to write numbers quickly.
The video drew popular scorn and indignation, prompting the teacher’s arrest.
During the arraignment, police prosecutor Supol Akeem Raji informed the court that the defendant committed the crimes on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at about 11 a.m.
According to Raji, the event occurred at the Chris Mistot School in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
He claimed she indecently treated a three-year-old student in her first-grade class, Abayomi Michael, by injuring his face.
The prosecution also informed the court that the defendant assaulted Abayomi by repeatedly delivering fist strikes to his face, resulting in damage and swelling.
According to the prosecution, the acts committed violated Sections 135 and 172 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015.
However, the defendant pled not guilty to the allegations filed against her.
Consequently, Magistrate Olabisi Kusanu granted her bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in the same sum who are gainfully employed.
In a statement acquired by newsmen on Thursday, state Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin claimed that the suspect was detained to the Kirikiri Correctional Facility till February 18, when the case will be continued.
The police official further stated that the student had been transferred to a medical institution for a thorough examination.
The statement said, “The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned Stella Nwadigo, 45, for indecent treatment and assault on a minor.
“The culprit, who was charged at Magistrate Court 1, Ogba today, January 9, 2025, was seen on film indecently treating and abusing a three-year-old primary school student in the Ikorodu region of Lagos State.
