Lagos State Government says it still does not endorse corporal discipline in open schools and has maintained directing as a compelling remedial degree.
The state Commissioner for Essential and Auxiliary Instruction, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, made this known in a meeting with the News Office of Nigeria on Monday.
Alli-Balogun said that flagellating understudies for indiscipline and other shapes of mischief remained disallowed.
He said that the point was to protect against dispensing harm on understudies, the blacking out of understudies, or indeed the passing of any understudy due to whipping by a course instructor.
According to him, flogging is not the best way to correct a student.
“There is a policy here in Lagos and other parts of the country prohibiting teachers from giving corporal punishment to students/pupils.
“Against flogging of students, we have adopted counselling as a measure of correction,” he said.
He added that minor punishments such as kneeling, picking up dirt, and cutting grass within the school premises could also be applied.
“This is part of our positive reinforcement, it is a powerful tool for shaping behaviour and encouraging desired outcomes.
