Nigerian journalists have been charged with stepping up their efforts to increase women’s participation in politics and governance.
Mrs Adebisi Adetunji, a resource person, led a training workshop for journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State, organized by ARDA Development Communication Incorporated and United Nations Women.
The conference was titled “Representation Matters: How Media Should Portray Women in Political Leadership and Governance in Nigeria” .
Adetunji frowned at the current low representation of women in both the National and State Assemblies, despite their vast numerical strength.
She advised journalists to create relevant women-oriented programmes, highlighting outstanding successful women who have made significant contributions to Nigeria’s development, in order to encourage women to take on leadership positions at all levels.
She highlighted culture, religion, money, inferiority complex, and prejudice as important barriers to women’s desire to take on leadership roles in the country.
