The death of Police Inspector Yusuf Blessing, who was working in Ondo State, has created controversy among the state police command due to the circumstances surrounding his death.
Blessing, a native of Ikoro-Ekiti in Ekiti State, was serving in Akotogbo, Irele Local Council Area, when he was reportedly burned to death.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s widow, who lives in the Osi village, revealed that 24 hours after unsuccessful attempts to contact her husband, she received a call from the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, alerting her that he had drowned.
According to her, her husband’s remains were presented to the community the next day, after which the three police officers who brought the casket retreated under demands to open the coffin.
According to reports, when the casket was opened, the body was discovered to be charred with a broken skull, contradicting the first assertion that he drowned, raising suspicions of foul play.
When contacted, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, acknowledged the event and stated that an inquiry had begun.
The PPRO stated that an autopsy will be performed on the deceased to determine the exact cause of his death.
“We have launched an inquiry into the situation, and the remains of the dead officer have been deposited in the mortuary while an autopsy would be carried out.”
