Tiwa Savage, an Afrobeats artist, has criticized the frequent criticism she receives for her dress choices.
In a recent episode of the ‘Receipts’ podcast, the 44-year-old single mother said that she frequently receives blowback for her fashion choices because of her age.
Savage expressed dissatisfaction that, although other female superstars in their forties, like American singer Beyoncé, are lauded for their long-lasting beauty when dressed seductively, she is frequently age-shamed by Nigerians when she does the same.
She stated, “They age-shame me every day. They ask, “How can a woman your age be wearing a bikini?” I can because I have a body.
“Beyoncé is in her forties and wears bikinis, yet Americans do not age shame her. They would say, for her age, black doesn’t crack. It is more praised when you look excellent in your latter years.
“But they [Nigerians] often say stuff like, ‘When her boy grows up, he will see this. My son will say, “My mother is a powerful and beautiful woman.”
