Two persons comprising a petrol tanker driver and his assistant, popularly called motor boy, died in an accident that occurred on Tuesday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Akinyemi Akinyinka, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, acknowledged the occurrence and stated that the agency’s quick response prevented a calamity in the state capital.
According to him, the incident was reported at precisely 05:01hrs on Tuesday via phone call by Mr Moruf Balogun of a falling petrol tanker opposite Total Filling Station, Orita Challenge, Ibadan.
He stated that once the address was obtained, fire personnel led by ACFS Olubunmi Christy were quickly dispatched to the location of the incident.
On arrival, he stated that the firemen discovered that the incident involved a falling petrol tanker that had become engulfed opposite a filling station.
“We quickly swung into action, and another fire truck commanded by ACFS Adekola was dispatched to help the attending crew in preventing the fire from obtaining extra velocity, which could lead to a catastrophic fire disaster.
“The foam chemical compound was applied and the fire was put under control within short period,” according to Akinyinka.
He stated that the burned driver and his aide were retrieved and handed over to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), who then transported them to the hospital.
“The driver and motor boy of the truck were burnt, recovered and handled over to the FRSC and they were conveyed to the hospital,” he informed me.
Akinyinka further stated that Sumal Food Limited firemen were present to assist, and that the agency’s officials were still on the scene cooling the fire to extinguish it completely.
The incident was caused by a brake failure while the truck’s driver was attempting to negotiate the roundabout outside the Total Filling Station, where the truck collided with a concrete barrier, somersaulted, and caught fire.
