Point-of-sale (POS) operators in Nigeria may soon raise their service costs after the Federal Government approved a 50% rise in telecoms service tariffs.
Ogungbayi Ganiyu, the National Public Relations Officer of the Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria (AMMBAN), confirmed this, noting the tariff hike’s impact on their business.
Ganiyu explained that mobile money agents rely significantly on telecom services, namely data, to conduct transactions.
“The raise in telecom tariffs would have an impact on our members’ activities. “I am afraid this will have a multiplier effect on service charges,” Ganiyu remarked.
He noted that, while POS operators may try to absorb the additional costs, financial pressures may eventually force them to boost rates in order to continue operating.
“We have not sat down and looked at the latest tariff hike,” he said, implying that future conversations would determine the next moves.
