Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, has committed to harness the state’s tourist potential in order to improve economic development.

The governor made the commitment on Saturday during the Lagos Boat Regatta 2024, with the theme ”Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life.”

The governor, while declaring the event open, emphasized that the boat regatta, which took place throughout the state’s five divisions, was a shared goal of highlighting the beauty of Lagos’ waterways for citizens to enjoy at all times.

“We are really thrilled that we can finally host a boat regatta, which marks the beginning of many festivities that will take place over the Yuletide season. This one, being a very first, is a demonstration of our commitment to develop tourism potential in Lagos.

“You know, one-third of Lagos is surrounded by water, so we need to be able to use our waterways not only as a mode of transportation, but also as a strong ecosystem for tourism, and today, you will see displays of various sizes of water infrastructure as well as boat regattas from Lagos’ five divisions.

“It will be a day and afternoon of pure tourism, enjoyment, and appreciation for the beauty of Lagos’ waterways. Let us sit back, relax, and appreciate the beauty of calm, the state’s tourist potential, and Lagos’ warmth.”

Earlier, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, stated that the Lagos Boat Regatta 2024 aims to immerse participants in the rich culture of the state’s waterway.
