Fear seized Taraba State University (TSU) Jalingo academics after three of them, a professor, a PhD holder, and a lecturer, died within 48 hours of each other.
Prof. Akporido Samuel, former Head of Department (HoD) of the Department of Chemical Sciences, collapsed and died at his office on Thursday. Dr. Kiliobas Sha’a, former HoD Biological Sciences, died in the early hours of Wednesday, the same time as Ibrahim Saleh Bali, a professor with the Department of Educational Foundation.
GREENMAX learned that, in addition to Prof. Samuel, who collapsed and died at his office, Dr. Sha’a died in his home during the night after suffering from high blood pressure, and Mr. Bali died at FMC Jalingo after a long illness.
According to a family source, Bali liquidated his possessions to pay for his medical bills before being sent to his hometown by the university administration, where he died.
Lecturers from the institution who spoke with our reporter expressed concern over how their colleagues died after going through financial misery and pain, noting that such a tragedy might happen to any of them because they face the same financial issues.
“Their death reminds all of us of what we are going through in this facility; it demonstrates that it could happen to anyone here since we are in the same financial situation. We are begging the government and university authorities to step up and meet our requests; we are going through a number of difficulties,” one of the academics, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said.
Dr. Mbave Joshua, chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Taraba State University chapter, lamented the working conditions of his colleagues in the institution during an interview with our correspondent. He stated that the lecturers at the institution lacked the financial backing to face their challenges.
