The United Nations and other global stakeholders have been encouraged to create an international water security fund to speed up the building of climate-resilient water infrastructure.
Dr. Prince Ero Ibhafidon, President of the Waterlight Save Initiative, announced this during the UN 2026 Water Conference’s organisational session.
He also urged the UN to require accountability for SDG 6, establish clear progress benchmarks to keep governments accountable, and increase access to water innovation, ensuring that technology improvements reach disadvantaged people.
“Solutions exist. The resources exist. All we need now is the courage to act.
“Will we be known in the future as the generation that ended water scarcity, or as the generation that let millions to suffer in silence? The period for pledges has expired. Now we must give results.
“Waterlight Save Initiative is ready. Let us turn words into actions. Let us get to work,” he replied.
He describes water scarcity as a silent disaster. One out of every three individuals does not have access to safe drinking water, and a child dies every two minutes from a waterborne disease.
Climate change is exacerbating the situation by drying up rivers and poisoning crucial water sources.
“We are halfway through the UN Water Action Decade, but progress on SDG 6-Clean Water and Sanitation is too slow. This is more than a crisis; it is a failure of leadership.
